The Daddy My Daddy Died

2008 May 27

On Tuesday, May 27 for the first time Loretta's husband Pheng stayed the night to watch over Dad, so we three could get some sleep. Pheng and Loretta slept in the den near Dad and Lee and I slept in the Living Room. While we three had slept, Pheng had stayed up that night. So at 3:30am Pheng wakes Loretta up and at that same time Lee and I wake up. Dad's breathing had definitely changed, it has become labored now. We call my sister Jill and told her to hurry, Pheng called my boys and Molly down from their bedroom, as we held Daddy's hand, we turn his bluegrass music up loud,we watched his chest as his took his three last breaths and we shouted words of "I love you Daddy, I love you Papa, I love you Old Man!" Old Man was what Lee called my Dad. So on a day like no other day where the sky was as blue as the ocean and no clouds in he sky at 4:12am Daddy left the loving arms of his family and entered the loving arms of God. Molly my dog had been restless for days for she knew what was happening. She knew Dad was dying for she snapped at my daughter (step-daughter) when she tried to hug Dad and Molly has never done that. I had told Lee a couple days before that when Daddy passed to make sure he was covered up and Lee did. Molly was allowed to sit at Dad's feet as she had done for the last two and half years. The funeral home was called in and I remember one of the men told me that they were doing something new, they ask my permission if they could cover Daddy with the American Flag, I said yes, I wanted pictures of this and so they waited, I got my camera ready and step down into the den and what I saw took my breath away, I could not see Daddy leave this house covered in the flag for it was just to much to handle. I ask Loretta to take pictures for me. After Daddy left I keep the oxygen on for a while for that was a sound that I heard for the last 15 years and it needed to stay on a little longer. Loretta, Pheng, Loretta's friend Amber and my friend Sheila stayed and finished painting Daddy's birdhouses and we remarked what a beautiful day for Daddy to go to home.....
