Laying My Daddy To Rest

2008 May 30

All my life I dreaded this day, I never wanted it to come. How odd that the day I married my husband Lee 27 years ago is also the same day I buried Daddy. As I walk to the casket I said to myself, "is this a dream?", I have rehearsed this walk so many times in the last three years. Am I really looking at Daddy's casket, covered with the American Flag. The men of the family are carrying Daddy to the site. Peter, Jason and Pheng on the left and Lee, Jeremy and Justin on the right. These men are carrying the Patriarch of the family to his final resting place. Pastor Ray performs the service but my mind was only on the person who is in front of me covered with the American Flag, the Bugler plays Taps and the Men prepare for the Folding of the Flags. They first take the one off of the casket and hand that one to Jeremy, then they place Loretta's flag on Daddy casket and fold that one and hand to Jeremy and then they take Jill's flag and place it on Daddy's casket and fold that one as well. Realizing my flag is on the bottom and was fixing to be handed to Jill, they did some fancy footwork and exchanged them. As each military man held a flag, they all dropped to one knee at the same time and handed a flag to us. As they rose they saluted us on behalf of this great nation and said the following words: "On Behalf Of The President Of The United States, I Present You This Flag, For Your Father's Service To Our Country. Please Accept Our Deepest Sympathies On The Loss Of Your Father, A Salior Of The United States Of America." Those words and emotion I felt at that moment and looking at those men will be a picture etched in my memory for the rest of my life. At the closing I walk by the grave and said, "I Love You Daddy" and headed back to the church to begin the Celebration.
