Susan: So how about Jill? Daddy: Jill just slipped in the world without no trouble, doctor he come to the hospital to deliver Jill, he told them to take the woman’s ah… whatcha call it. To start with she was not to have any babies and wind up having two more. This time I am going to make sure she don’t have any more babies, I am going to take them out myself. Susan: Well, he had to get her permission, he could not do that without her permission. Daddy: Ya. Susan: Did Mama let you know that she was in labor? Were you at the hospital? Did you take her to the hospital? What did you do? Daddy: I took her to the hospital. Susan: Which hospital? Daddy: Crawford Long. Susan: Was she having labor pains at home? Daddy: Ya. Susan: So you drove or she went in the ambulance/ Daddy: She went in the ambulance. Susan: So then what? Daddy: And ah, I got in the car. Susan: Your car? Daddy: Ya. Susan: What kind of car was that? Daddy: Oh... Susan: Probably station wagon. Daddy: No, it is small Chrysler, I think. Susan: Mmm. Daddy: Blue and white. Susan: So she went up there to Crawford Long. By the way, why did she have Loretta at Emory but Jill at Crawford Long? Daddy: Crawford Long is a branch off of Emory. Susan: Did she know she was going to have another C-section? Daddy: Ya. Susan: Ok. Where were you? Daddy: I was downstairs when Jill was born. She wasn’t do any more “fits” you know. Susan: Wait a minute Daddy, she had monster faces with me, did she have monster faces with Loretta. Daddy: No. Susan: Did she have monster faces with Jill? Daddy: No. Susan: She was having contractions. Daddy: Ya, that’s all she was having. But ah, they know to start off with that she was going to have a C-section, cause her pelvis bone was not big enough to get a baby’s head thru. Susan: Right. Ok, she had a C-section, did you get to see her in the recovery room or did you have to wait. Daddy: I seen her in the recovery room. Susan: When did you get to see Jill? Daddy: Oh, right after she had her, they took her out Jill. Susan: You were not in the room when they took. Daddy: I went to the Baby’s Room. Susan: Oh the nursery. Back then in ‘69 you weren’t in the room with Jill and Mama, like Lee was with me and Jason. See back then the father could not be in there, now they can. Anyway so , you saw Jill, who told you first that she was a girl? Daddy: Oh, the nurse did. Susan: Did they pull the blanket back like she did with me ? Daddy: No. Susan: Did she just say “Congratulations! It’s a Girl!” Daddy: She said, “It’s a little girl!” Susan: Uh huh. Daddy: We knew it going to be a girl. Susan: How did you know? Daddy: The scan. Susan: Oh, OK. Daddy: They told me there there’s going to be a little girl. Susan: Oh. Daddy: Martha said, “Just so it ain’t a little boy”. Susan: Oh, I know. Daddy: She got to talkin’ about her and the nurse, about little boys playing with themselves. Susan: Ya. Daddy: She said, “He’s born that a way”. Susan: Anyway, so how did you come up with her name? Oh, What did you think of her when you first saw her? What did she look like? Daddy: She was a cute little burger!. Susan: I thought you said she look like a drowned rat? Daddy: She did. Susan: She did. Susan: So, Ok, How did you come up with the name Ver’ada Jillene? Daddy: I ask Martha, what was her Mama’s name. Well Versie, I didn’t realized it started with V*E*R, and Mama’s name I always knew is was Ada. And I ask her, “Martha, said, I let’s give her your Mama’s name and my Mama’s name. She said, “What do you mean, How?” I said, your Mama’s first three letters in her name is V*E*R* and Mama’s name is A*D*A, ain’t but three in that, and ah, she ah, said that sounds all right and she kept on till she said it. She said, “Verada, Verada and ah, I said, “Now you got it right, Verada.” But it will always be Verada, Verada, say it a little fast. How about Jill’s middle name, where did that come from? I don’t know where that come from, she said, “Verada Jillene.” I don’t know where she got that Jillene. Maybe some of her nurses in there. Susan: I remember being at the house and Granny was standing next to me when I guess that was you that give me a call or might have been Mama that told me that Jill was born. Headache ever since… What else can you think about Jill when she’s in the hospital? I have to give her at least two pages and not one paragraph! Did you feed her in the hospital? Daddy: Ya. Susan: Did she crap all over you in the hospital? Daddy: No, she peed thru her diaper on me . Susan: She cry a lot in the hospital? Daddy: No she didn’t cry to much. Susan: Anything else about Jill? Mama buy her a bunch of clothes too? Daddy: Oh, yea, she bought her little dresses.
